gingerbread houses - finally - it was Dec. 4th

I'm really not keeping up with the Advent activities very well.
But we did get to the gingerbread houses on Saturday.

Do to the rationing of molasses (you can't get it here and the bit that my mommy sent to me I am using only for gingersnaps!), there was not going to be actual gingerbread houses this year.
And this forsaken country doesn't have any gingerbread house kits, if you can believe it!
(hey, I should make my own for next year's craft fair!!!)
The kids never eat the gingerbread anyway - only the candy.
So, we made cracker/cookie houses instead.
I took all our tea boxes (we've been on a tea kick lately.... it is the beverage of choice) and taped two together for each child.
Then we made real live royal icing - with raw egg whites and everything (no meringue powder here, either), and glued the crackers and/or cookies to the boxes.
NO LICKING FINGERS!!
The cookies didn't work so well as they were wafer cookies, so they kept splitting. But I think the kids liked the excuse to eat the faulty ones.
And then for the fun part.

Maddy constructed a beautiful two story English tutor.
Mia loves the Colonial style, so naturally she, with her most concentrated efforts, constructed a house in that manner.

Lucy just loves a beach cottage.....

And Cade, being the future architect, went for a high rise.

Okay, okay, they are all just plain regular old houses, but they are darn cute.

Did you happen to notice the frosting on Cade's leg?
Look again..... slightly below the shin?
Yup, he gets really into his work.
